Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

What gets stuck in these lines?

Four causes account for the chokes in this suburb, and each needs its own fix:

Cracked earthenware collars

Post-war houses here drain through short clay lengths, and seasonal swelling in the clay subsoil has pulled the joints apart.

Fine gum roots

The trees fringing the university's bushland edge push roots into any fracture within reach.

Grease from share-house kitchens

Flatmates cooking separate meals put more fat down one sink than a couple would, and it sets in the line like candle wax.

Stormwater with nowhere to go

The 1950s yard drainage was built light, and the flat blocks pond instead of shedding when a Newcastle downpour lands.

The clay does the slow damage. Since the 1950s, each drought has shrunk the ground under the fibro and weatherboard cottages and each wet spell has swollen it again, moving every collar a little. When one address chokes again and again, one broken length tends to be the cause, not the whole run. The camera shows which, and the quote prices a lasting fix instead of another clear.

Roots on the campus side. Where gums shade the streets next to the university bushland, fine root hairs find every gap the moving clay opens. The camera run pins down where they got in, so the repair seals that gap and the roots do not simply grow back after the clear.

Can a choked line be repaired?

It can be. If the footage finds a single broken length with good clay either side, there are two options, and you get a price on each:

  • Excavate and replace the damaged length in PVC, which suits a line with multiple failures or a collapsed section.
  • Which seals the crack from the inside without digging up a yard, a driveway or a garden.

The pipe relining page carries the whole method: what the liner covers, how long the section needs, and how the finished result is checked.

From choke to clear

Whether it is one sluggish basin or the whole house backing up, a drain job runs in this order:

  1. 01

    Camera first

The CCTV pass shows the blockage, the pipe material and any joint damage before a tool goes near the line.

  2. 02

    The clear

The jet blaster cuts through grease and sludge with plain water; on fragile old clay the electric eel does the mechanical work instead.

  3. 03

    Camera again

The follow-up pass shows water moving end to end and records the pipe's condition for the report.

You keep the recording. For a rented cottage that gives the landlord proof of what was wrong, and any later repair starts from facts.

How a drain quote is built

"Not only all of that but the job came in right on quote." Steve

The figure moves with four things:

  • Access to the inspection point A tidy surface grate is a quicker job than a subfloor crawl under an older cottage.
  • Pipe material Clay, PVC, copper and galvanised steel each need their own cutters and their own replacement fittings.
  • What the camera finds A root mass to cut out is one figure; a collapsed section to excavate is another, and the footage settles which it is.
  • Night and weekend work A drain that cannot wait until Monday is priced at the after-hours rate, shown before we start.

When a landlord or agent is paying, that written figure is what they sign off on.

Birmingham Gardens Drain Services

Each page below covers one method or one part of the system:

Plumber running a drain camera at an outdoor pit

CCTV drain inspection

** the camera pass that finds the fault before anyone digs, with footage you keep.

Plumber working a drain-clearing machine

Drain jetting

** high-pressure water clearing for grease, sludge and sand, with no chemicals in the line.

Plumber laying new pipe in an open trench

Blocked sewer

** the main that backs up the whole house, cleared and camera-checked.

Plumber installing a strip drain beside a sliding door

Stormwater drains

** yard and roof drainage that ponds on these flat blocks when the 1950s provision gives up.

Pipe relining equipment set up in a shower recess

Pipe relining

** the no-dig repair that seals a cracked clay section from the inside.

Tree roots exposed around a pipe in a trench

Tree root removal

** gum roots cut out of the pipe, with the joint they came through repaired.

When we're not the right call. Sometimes the camera finds the break out in the street sewer main. Hunter Water owns and repairs that main, so you report it to them with our footage, and it never appears in our price. If a neighbour's drain is spilling into yours, the fix sits on their property, and the recording shows which side of the fence the fault is on.

From ring to running drain

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1232 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

The camera finds it, the clear opens it

The CCTV pass locates the choke, the jetter or eel clears it, and the follow-up pass confirms the flow.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Before you book the clear

Do you clear drains with chemicals?

No. The jet blaster uses plain water under pressure and the electric eel is mechanical. Chemicals only mask a choke for a while, and they sit inside old earthenware that already carries cracked joints, so they play no part in the clear.

Will jetting damage the old earthenware under my cottage?

The CCTV pass happens first, so we know how much the pipe can take before any pressure goes near it. Where the clay is badly fractured, the eel is the gentler tool, and the footage decides which one gets used.

Why do the drains near the campus choke more than others?

The streets closest to the bushland campus carry two problems at once. Fine roots slip into any crack near the gum canopy, and share-house kitchens flush cooking grease in quantities a family never produces. Both plug the same short-collar clay drains.

Can you clear a sewer shared by several houses?

Yes. One elderly clay line can serve a whole converted cottage of six tenants, and clearing it works the same as any other main. Where several titled properties share the line, the strata and real estate process handles the paperwork and the billing.
