What counts as an emergency call?
Any fault that is actively flooding the house, cutting off the water supply, or filling the yard with sewage counts. The four that cannot wait until morning:
A burst pipe or split braided hose
A blocked sewer main
A gas smell
A cylinder leaking from the base
Burst pipe? Turn the water off first
The single most useful thing you can do before ringing happens at the meter.
Stop the flow at the meter
Isolate a single fixture

Why does after-hours work cost more?
We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.
Paying a plumber to work at 2am costs more than 2pm, and that rate is written into your quote before we start.
On an urgent call, the figure depends on:
- What the fault is Swapping a hose is quicker work than a burst service pipe under the floor.
- The pipe material Steel, clay, copper and PVC each take a different repair path and parts order.
- Access to the failure Pipe hidden behind laundry sheeting or beneath a low cottage floor adds labour.

Covered for a year

Urgent work that lives on other pages
These urgent jobs are explained in more depth elsewhere:
- Camera-checked drain clears The blocked sewer page explains the CCTV pass that proves the line is flowing.
- A tank that died tonight The hot water systems page covers the changeover and the loan tank that keeps showers running.
- Water you cannot find An unexplained wet patch or a climbing bill points to leak detection.
- Roots in the line A sewer that keeps choking may have roots inside, covered under cutting roots from drains.
When we're not the right call
Water gushing from the street or footpath before your meter comes from a Hunter Water pipe, and Hunter Water repairs it. No power at all after a flood is for an electrician or the network, not a plumber. For units sharing one sewer, the strata plumbing process sorts out who approves the work.
Questions before you dial
How do I turn the water off at the meter?
On cottage blocks here, the meter tap sits in a lidded box near the front boundary. Turn it clockwise as far as it goes, then run a low garden tap to empty the pipes. If the tap will not budge, mention it when you ring and the right tool comes out with the plumber.
Do you take late-night calls from share houses?
Yes. We are Available 24/7, whoever is calling. In a share house of students from the Callaghan campus, one old clay sewer can serve every bathroom, so a choke at midnight leaves the whole house without a toilet.
Can a dead hot water system wait until morning?
A tank that has simply stopped heating is not dangerous. If it is leaking, close the cold valve on top of the unit first. Ring at any hour; when the new unit is not in stock, a loan tank keeps the showers going until it comes.
What if the fault is the sewer main in the street?
Sewer mains in the street are Hunter Water's pipes, so their crews repair them. Describe what you see when you ring, and if the signs point to the main, you contact Hunter Water directly rather than booking us.
